Nelson Mandela has been in the hospital for two weeks recovering from lung infection and the South African government claims he is on the mend, but a CBS News report suggests otherwise. The South African government insisted Friday that Nelson Mandela was on the mend, but a jarring report by CBS News raised fresh concerns that his health might have actually taken a turn for the worse.
Citing sources, the network said Mandela underwent a procedure to repair a bleeding ulcer and that his liver and kidneys were “functioning at 50%.”
“We're told he hasn't opened his eyes in days and is unresponsive,” CBS reported. “We also understand that Mandela family members are discussing just how much medical intervention is enough for an old and very sick man.”

Mandela is 94 and has been hospitalized with a stubborn lung infection for more than two weeks.
CBS also reported that on the night Mandela was being rushed to a hospital in Pretoria, he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated.

Also, the military ambulance broke down and Mandela was forced to wait on the side of the highway for more than 40 minutes before another one got there.
South African officials confirmed the CBS account about Mandela’s ambulance, but said the Nobel Prize winner’s health was improving.

Former President Thabo Mbeki also sounded a hopeful note.
“Nelson Mandela is in fact improving, in terms of his health,” Mbeki said Thursday in a radio interview. "I think we really need to feel comforted that we still have him with us now."

One of Mandela’s grandsons said he might be allowed to leave the hospital soon.
“Positively we can say that he has been getting better and better each day and hopefully he'll be coming home soon," Ndaba Mandela said in The Star, a South African newspaper.
The leader of the fight against South Africa’s racist apartheid system, Mandela was released from prison in 1990 and was elected his country’s first black president in 1994.
