Asuu call for speedy passage of retirement bill

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again called on the government and other stakeholders in the education sector to appeal to the National Assembly, to as a matter of national urgency, pass the 70 years retirement age for academics in Nigeria Universities.

Speaking after a congress of the Union held at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State Chapter on Wednesday, the Chairman, Dr. Busuyi Mekusi said that the issue is one of the provisions of the FGN/ASUU 2009 agreement and that since then, ASUU has been struggling to get this agreement implemented.

"It is also interesting to know that this agreement will be due for a review next year. The whole idea of ASUU having to come up with 70 years retirement age for professional academic cadre is for us to be able to improve staff grade in Nigeria university and to get people to stay back to be able to do more Phds," he said while speaking on the reason for the call.

Mekusi said that it can be noticed that the astronomical increase the nation has experienced in the number of universities is not equal to the manpower for effective teaching. "We are using this opportunity to call on well meaning Nigerians, the people and others that are concern to call on the senate to pass the bill into law before the end of this legislative period," he said.

Mekusi argued that the bill should be passed before May 29 and also called for the use of the Doctrine of Necessity that was used to pass some executive bill to also be applied to this case as well.

Another issue discussed at the congress was the need for the government to increase funding of Universities.
