Senate slates three days next week for PIB


The Senate on Thursday raised hope for the quick passage of the controversial Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) when its president, David Mark, announced that three days have been scheduled next week for the second reading of the bill.

The bill was transmitted to the National Assembly last year by President Goodluck Jonathan and the lawmakers gazetted it immediately to avoid its duplication.

Obama: may take weeks, months to fix budget mess



WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says it may take a couple of weeks or a couple of months to reach a deal to end Washington's battle over spending cuts. The president spoke after meeting with congressional leaders at the White House on $85 billion in automatic spending cuts that go into effect Friday.

Obama says the cuts are "dumb and arbitrary" and he blamed them on Republicans in Congress.

The naira depreciated further against the United States dollar at the interbank segment of the foreign exchange market yesterday as a result of strong demand for the greenback. Checks yesterday showed that the local currency slipped by 71 kobo to close at N158.10 to a dollar Thursday, compared to the N157.39 to a dollar it stood on Monday.
