C-River Assembly summons Tinapa MD over inactivity at resort

MANAGING Director of Tinapa Business Resort and Leisure, Chief Bassey Ndem, yesterday, appeared before the Cross River State House of Assembly, to explain why there was slowdown in economic activities at the resort and the mounting debt profile. The House recently set up a Special Committee to investigate the activities of the multi-billion naira resort, its ownership, the debt profile and some of the challenges affecting the smooth take-off of business activities at the resort.Speaking before the Committee, Ndem said the future was not bleak for the outfit, noting that Tinapa was a long term investment.

Ndem said that the Federal Government had not been supportive to the only state-owned free trade zone, as no commitment had been made to boost its economic activity, adding that the non-dredging of the Calabar port had been a major challenge to the place.

He said: “Tinapa should be seen as a long term project, which has the potential to change the fortune of the state and the country. The future is not bleak as people may think. We have four emporiums with 10, 000 square metres that can accommodate about 10,000 people at the same time and only two had been occupied. Last year, over 500 containers moved through Tinapa.”

Ndem denied allegation that Tinapa had been abandoned by the Governor Liyel Imoke’s administration, adding that the government had been in support of the place.

Speaking earlier, chairman of the Special Committee, Chief Jacob Enyia, said the committee was not a punitive one but to get the information on the status of the resort, the shareholders, level of investments and the investors, its indebtedness as at April 2007 it was commissioned and the current indebtedness, how much it had generated and the challenges facing its operations.
