Few passengers at MMIA in spite of break in protest

Flight activities at the domestic terminals of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, were low on Sunday, in spite of the suspension of protests till Monday by the organised labour. The organised labour and coalition of civil societies have been on strike since January 9 in protest of the Federal Govern-ment’s removal of petrol subsidy. The labour on Friday announced a two-day break in the strike. The strike had crippled activities of the nation’s airports as aviation workers prevented flights.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on Sunday that only few passengers turned out at the two local terminals of the MMIA to get tickets to board flights.

Short queues of passengers, including children, were seen at the counters of Arik, Aero Contractor, Air Nigeria and Dana airlines.

Some passengers were seen waiting to be checked in.

NAN observed that security personnel were not at the main gates to the local terminals as vehicles freely moved in and out of the premises.

Meanwhile, some airlines delayed their morning flights due to bad weather in some parts of the country.

An Associated Airline flight to Benin and Aero Contractor flights to Owerri and Port Harcourt were among those delayed.

A traveller, Mrs Esther Okenwa, told the NAN that her flight to Port Harcourt was delayed, adding, however, that it was a good decision.

An Abuja-bound passenger, Mr Atila Otega, appealed to the Federal Government and the organised labour to urgently resolve their conflict to reduce the suffering of Nigerians.

``We are suffering a lot, I appeal that the strike should be called off,’’ he said.

A trader, Mrs Afusat Balogun, told NAN that the strike affected her business adversely, and hoped that the ongoing meeting between government and the organised labour be fruitful.
