Police prosecute 45 over post – election violence in Kaduna

ABOUT 45 suspects arrested over last year’s post-election violence in some parts of Kaduna State, are presently facing prosecution for various offences, said Kaduna State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Hon. Jonathan Adamu Kish.Kish said this at a news conference in Kaduna as part of the first year anniversary of the Governor Patrick Yakowa’s administration.

Kish said: “So far, 45 suspects have been charged to court over the disturbances that took place in April 2011 following the announcement of the last presidential results. The 45 persons were part of the about 380 arrested by the police in connection with the crisis. But the police are still investigating some other people arrested during the crisis.

“The ministry has issued legal advises on six out of the 10 case diary presented to them by the police regarding the crisis. The Commission of inquiry set up by the state government to investigate the crisis has recommended that those indicted be further investigated and prosecuted.

“The white paper on the report has already been sent to the policed, who are currently carrying our further investigations. We expect that as soon as they complete this exercise, they will forward their report to us for advice and prosecution where necessary.

“The police are also investigating the series of attack carried out by unknown persons in some rural communities across the state and three people have so far been arrested in connection with the attack and killing of two women at Tabak, in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of the state.”

On the delay in the conduct of local government elections in the state, the Commissioner said: “The state House of Assembly is currently working on reviewing the laws establishing the state Independent Electoral Commission to make it compliant with the Electoral Act.”
