Customs Impound N25m Worth Of Petroleum Product

THE Cross River/Akwa Ibom Area Command of the Nigerian Customs service has impounded four truckloads of diesel worth N25m in its effort to check bunkering. Briefing reporters on Thursday at its headquarters in Calabar, the Area Controller, Hassan Mundu, said four persons have been arrested.

He noted that the tankers were intercepted by the anti-smuggling patrol team of the command in Akwa Ibom.

Mundu said four suspects were also arrested for conveying the product, which according to him, was loaded into tankers from wooden boats along water creeks in Nambe village in Itu Local government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

He said that the suspects, and the tankers with registration numbers XR611ABC, XZ866 EPE and XA 72 KDG, would be handed over to the anti- bunkering task force in Akwa Ibom State for further action and prosecution.

He noted that from January to June 2012, his command has made more than eight seizures of various contraband and prohibited goods with a total duty paid value of about N20.3m.

He warned persons involved in bunkering to desist, as officers and men of the service will not condone any illegal activity.
