At Int’l Conference, Adeboye Offers To Help On Constitution Review

GENERAL Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor E. A. Adeboye, has offered to lend a helping hand to Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process. He said this last week at the Redemption Camp during a global conference for the establishment of an international Conflict Mediation Commission on Middle East peace talks.

After presiding over the conference, questions were raised by participants, some of which addressed the state of the nation.

Responding to a question on need for religious leaders to weigh in on the ongoing Nigerian constitutional amendment, Adeboye said: “Somebody asked about the constitution; we are going to do something about it. I can assure you, he (President Jonathan) will hear the outcome of this conference, as regards the issue of the constitution.”

The General Overseer, however, did not go into further details on the intervention, besides an apparent agreement that the voices of religious leaders in the country should form part of the constitutional amendment process.

Different aspects of the conference have been held in the last one year at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the US Congress in Washington DC, at the European Union and in London.

Pastor Adeboye, who restated his usual remark on his uncompromising stand about being Nigerian and remaining so, stated: “I am passionately Nigerian and, in our own time, there will be peace in Nigeria.”

Condemning violence under the guise of religion, the prominent cleric observed that the Nigeria version of the global conference “has enabled us speak openly. And I believe that something good would happen as a result of this conference.”

He advised Nigerians not to respond to violence with violence, noting: “violence has a way of dealing with those who started it.”

He, however, said Christians in the country should never run away from the enemy: “The enemy must never see your back; you are never to run from the enemy.”
