Abuja - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan sacked the head of the civil aviation authority on Monday, citing an “unsatisfactory response to concerns of stakeholders in the aviation sector”, nine months after the country's worst air disaster in 20 years.
The statement announcing the removal of civil aviation authority Director General Harold Demuren, an aeronautical engineer, made no mention of the Dana Air crash that killed 163 people last June.
No one has suggested that Demuren was to blame for the crash which did, however, expose weaknesses in the oversight of Nigeria's domestic airlines, many of which are suffering severe financial problems.
No replacement to the position was named.
In June, Dana Air flight 992, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 , crashed into an apartment block in a populated Lagos suburb, killing 153 people onboard and 10 others on the ground.
Nigerian legislators accused Demuren of managing the aftermath of the crash poorly, and they passed a motion last month calling for his removal.
It was the first major crash in several years, although Nigeria has one of the world's worst airline safety records. - Reuters
