2013 UTME Is On Course – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has restated its commitment to conduct a hitch-free 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). But stakeholders have said the scrapping of JAMB, the National Examinations Council (NECO) and others may reduce waste but worsen the nation’s unemployment situation
Reacting to some newspaper publications about the intention of the federal governments to scrap some of its agencies, an expert, Prof. Abdulhamid Ujo said there was nothing wrong if government wanted to review its functions, especially where it discovers a repetition of functions.

He said, “So many institutions are created and as a result many of such institutions have overlapping functions, for instance NECO/WAEC are performing similar functions and as such there are duplications of functions.

So I see nothing wrong if government decide to scrap some agencies with overlapping functions

The professor maintained that his only worry was that in the need to create reforms, more problems may be added as unemployment can become an outcome of the scraps.

He said: “Some reforms in the past have created more problems, for instance, in Nigeria there already is the issue of mass unemployment and the scrapping of these agencies will only lead to more unemployment, but apart from that, there is nothing wrong if government decides to curtail on the waste of manpower and resources through duplication of duties.”

But in an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP Public Relations Officer of JAMB, Mr. Fabian Benjamin, said “There was no confrontation if government today decides to scrap JAMB, we have nothing to say in any case it is just a readjustment of functions”

Meanwhile, in a follow up statement made available to LEADERSHIP and signed by the PRO for the Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, the regulatory body said “That the reassurance became necessary in view of media reports which say that the Federal Government may have cancelled UTME examination.

The statement reads in part, “The Board wishes to state that as a responsible and responsive organization it is not averred to innovation, changes and government policies skewed to improve the lot of the sector but reiterates that it has not changed the date of 2013 UTME”.

“Consequently, candidates are informed that the Board’s 2013 UTME slated for April 27 will take place as scheduled. And the dates for the Computer Based Test (CBT) will also be communicated to candidates’ soon.

“Arrangements have been completed as relevant stakeholders have been sensitised and briefed about the examination while the Board has deployed all necessary logistics and materials to all designated centres preparatory to the examination.”
