The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kaduna State Command, yesterday arrested 20 Nigeriens and repatriated 17 of them, with another 57 Nigerians also arrested from an uncompleted building in Barnawa, Kaduna South local government area of Kaduna State.
The Kaduna State Comptroller of Immigration Service, Hamman Yerima, while parading the illegal immigrants at the Kaduna Headquarters of NIS, said that the illegal immigrants were arrested in an uncompleted building in Uganda Street at Barnawa in Kaduna South local government area of Kaduna State, and, upon interrogation, were found to have entered Nigeria without the required documents.
The comptroller also stated that 57 Nigerians who engage in commercial motorcycling, popularly known as Okada, were also arrested in yet another uncompleted building within the same area.
He informed that 3 of the Nigerien who were earlier arrested were later found to have valid ECOWAS resident permit.
He said though those arrested were not found with any weapons or arms, they strongly resisted arrest, leading to one of his officers sustaining injury on his legs and receiving treatment at home.
According to him, “the 17 illegal immigrants from Niger Republic will be repatriated this (yesterday) evening while those 57 Nigerians will be interrogated and, if need be would be referred to the police.
“In Barnawa area of Kaduna, we arrested 77 suspected illegal immigrants in three uncompleted buildings in Uganda street of Kaduna South local government area. We brought them here on the assumption that all of them were Nigeriens, but this was not to be because we discovered that 57 of them were Nigerians, while 20 of them were Nigeriens.
“Out of the 20 Nigeriens, 17 of them had no documents available with them with no means of identifications, and this is what we referred to as prohibited illegal immigrants in Nigeria.”
