Lagos State Government has sacked about 157 officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA for gross misconduct. It was gathered that 57 of the officials had been earlier sacked prior to the publication of about 100 LASTMA officials’ names in the April edition of the state newsletter, Alausa Alert. This has brought the number of those sacked in the last one month to 157.
A source in the state Civil Service Commission told our correspondent that the officials were sacked because of different offences ranging from corruption, certificate forgery, bribery and dereliction of duty, among others. But the management of LASTMA denied that the officials were sacked based on allegation of corruption and certificate forgery.
However, the source said more officials might be sacked in the coming days as names of about 50 others had just been forwarded to the Personnel Management Board, PMB, the disciplinary organ of the government, to look into the allegation of gross misconduct levelled against them.
It was learnt that the sacked officials, whose pictures and names were published in the newsletter, could not prove their innocence before the PMB, hence they were shown the way out of service.
Over 250 LASTMA officials were dismissed by the government over issues ranging from gross misconduct, corruption, among others.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Kayode Opeifa, while briefing journalists, said government would not condone any form of indiscipline among LASTMA officials.
He said: “The LASTMA authority is strict in applying disciplinary measures as nobody that has done wrong will go unpunished.”
