The dead man was so badly disfigured by the flames that officials will need DNA and dental records to identify him, the officer said.
Authorities were unsure what prompting the fiery suicide, which occurred before a crowd of witnesses in the middle of the nation’s capital on a warm fall day.
Passing joggers yanked off their shirts and attempted to extinguish the flames as onlookers gaped in disbelief. the man was later pronounced dead at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
