Riot policeman commits suicide in Niger

A riot policeman, identified as Corporal Tanko Usman, has allegedly committed suicide in an uncompleted building along Eastern By-pass in Minna, Niger State.

Our correspondent gathered that Usman, who was attached to the Mobile Police Force 12, shot himself with his service rifle – An AK-47 – on Saturday evening. The incident was said to have happened after the policeman returned from his duty post at one of the second generation banks in the state capital.

The corporal was said to have parked his motorcycle by the road and trekked into the uncompleted building where he took his life.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that Usman, who was in his early 30s was seen entering the uncompleted building.

He said, “We all saw him when he was entering the building, but nobody suspected his mission. Few minutes later – I think five minutes – we heard the sound of a gun being fired and we all rushed to the scene.”

It was learnt that on seeing that the policeman had taken his life, residents of the area immediately notified the Maitumbi Police Division.

The division was said to have contacted MOPOL 12, which sent some of its men to evacuate the body.

Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Richard Oguche, confirmed the incident. He stated that the body had been deposited at IBB Specialist Hospital mortuary, Minna.

He said, “The fact is that there was a report that a man suspected to be a mobile policeman allegedly shot himself in an uncompleted building at Eastern By-pass.

“It was later discovered that he was from 12 squadron Police Mobile Force. He shot himself with his service rifle which was also recovered from the scene of the incident.”
