Lawyers kick over N70bn rice deal

A group, Lawyers Unite Against Corruption in Nigeria, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and its sister agency, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to look into an alleged plan by the Kwara State Government to seal a N70 billion rice production and processing investment deal with Vasolar Consortium Company of Spain. The organisation, in a statement signed by its Chairman and Secretary Barristers Badmos Adeniji and Kayode Otaru respectively, faulted the choice of Spain for the deal.

It insisted that the country is not among the top rice producing nations according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

The group further alleged that searches in all relevant agencies including the Spanish Chambers of Commerce could not confirm the claims that the company or its promoter has a history of success in rice production and processing or in any other area related to the deal.
