Senate Caucus Insists On Representation In PDP NEC

The PDP caucus in the Senate says its insistence on having National Assembly members in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is not aimed at reducing the powers of state governors.Senate leader Victor Ndoma-Egba told journalists in Abuja on Wednesday after a caucus meeting that the lawmakers had nothing against state governors but were only interested in instituting balanced representation in the NEC.

`` It is not a contest between the National Assembly members and the governors. We want to ensure that every stakeholder, every section of the PDP feels represented.

``When I came to the Senate in 2003 there were no governors but by 2007 we had a number of governors.

``By 2011 their population in the Senate had increased. The Senate is beginning to look like a destination for governors and if that is so it means there is very little difference between us and them.’’

Ndoma-Egba said the lawmakers wanted to ensure that every state had, at least, one senator and one House of Representatives member in the NEC.

He said the governors were not opposed to the suggestion, adding that the caucus meeting was held to discuss the matter and other contentious issues.

The Senate leader expressed the optimism that issues relating to membership of the party’s executive committee would be resolved before its national convention on March 24.
