US opens application for Nigeria’s special self-help programme

applications are now open for Nigerians interested in benefitting from the 2012 Special Self-Help Programme of the United States, according to a statement by the US Embassy.The statement, issued yesterday in Abuja, said the applications will close July 31, 2012 and urged interested groups to contact abujash@state.gov or the embassy’s website for details.

Each year, the US Mission offers small grants to community development activities throughout Nigeria. The programme is designed to assist communities to help themselves.

“Many community-led projects were realized including boreholes to provide clean water; food processing machines to improve incomes for farmers; providing books and materials to schools; and constructing classrooms and health clinics.

“All projects have had a large impact on people in villages and rural areas and involved community participation at all levels from planning to execution,” the statement read.

Communities willing to benefit are also expected to contribute land, labour, skills, money, materials, supervision, or other resources for the success of the projects.

It said the mission is currently contributing from $3,000 to $10,000 to any singlee project and also welcomes smaller requests.

“A joint grant signing ceremony for the 2011 Special Self-Help Grants, Ambassador’s Small Grants and PEPFAR Small Grants programmes, was held early this month, March 2012, as a result, 44 small-scale projects are currently underway in Nigeria.

When completed, the projects will benefit over 150,000 men, women and children including orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV and AIDS,” the statement added.
