Justice Habeeb Abiru of a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, on Thursday, vacated July 18 and 19, 2012 earlier scheduled as trial dates to enable the defence enough time to assemble their witnesses in the ongoing trial of the former Managing Director of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Dr Erastus Akingbola and adjourned the matter till September 10, 2012.Akingbola and his associate, Mr Bayo Dada, were charged to court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly stealing N47.1 billion belonging to the bank
At the resumed hearing of the matter, Akingbola, represented by Michael Sunbola asked the court to vacate the dates earlier scheduled and adjourn as a result of their inability to produce any of their witnesses in court, which was vehemently opposed by the prosecution counsel, Emmanuel Ukala (SAN).
Ukala, in opposing the adjournment, argued that the reason given by the defence for the request of adjournment was callous.
Justice Abiru frowned at the attitude of the defence and gave them a final warning before adjourning till September 10, 2012 for continuation of trial.
