Orji flays NBA over appointment of CJ

GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia State has accused the Aba branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) of frustrating his administration’s efforts to reform the judiciary and appoint a substantive chief judge for the state.Orji said but for the suit initiated by the association, the state government would have long appointed a new Chief Judge of the state.

He also accused the lawyers of being partisan and resorting to ill-conceived criticisms of his administration.

The governor made the allegations at the weekend when members of the Eastern Bar Forum (EBF), who held their quarterly meeting in Umuahia, visited him in Umuahia.

Orji said the association’s stance on several policies was worrisome especially as his government, according to him, has treated the judiciary well.

According to him, the NBA branch was polarised and subjecting his government to irritating criticisms.

“We have in Abia State treated the judiciary well, harmonised the salary of law officers, provided them with conducive working environment and vehicles for judges and magistrates including appointing 50 lawyers/members of the state NBA to preside over mobile courts,” he said.

The governor said his administration was “not against constructive criticisms. What I expect from the NBA is positive suggestions on how to move the state forward. My government has, however, not reacted with vindictiveness to the Aba NBA despite its sustained negative attitude to this government.

“The Aba NBA is partly responsible for the delay in appointing the state substantive Chief Judge because the branch took the matter to court,” he said.

Orji urged the forum to intervene in the matter with a view to calling the branch to order.

Chairman of the EBF, Mr. Kamsodo Wodu, told the governor that the forum, comprising nine states of the former Eastern Region, were in Umuahia for their quarterly meeting, adding that the association was keen on upholding the ideals of the NBA in the former region.

He lauded the governor for tackling insecurity in the state and called for the establishment of state or community police in the federation
