TUC women seek stiffer laws against rapists

The women’s commission of Trade Union Congress (TUC) is seeking the enactment of stiffer laws by the Lagos State House of Assembly, to punish rapists in the society. Rose Orji Kalu, chairperson of TUC who led the women group on a rally to the House of Assembly at Alausa, Lagos last week, decried increasing cases of rape and other forms of violence against women.
“We want the House to pass a law that would deal with rapists; we noticed that the perpetrators of this act almost go scot-free. We feel concerned because children, starting from primary school to higher institutions are being raped and nothing is being done to salvage the situation.”

Orji said, “We are feeling the pain and as a matter of urgency, we want the House to act by enacting a law to deal with violence against women.”

Funmilayo Tejuosho, a member of the House, said Lagos state government has done a lot on issues concerning women.

“We have passed laws on domestic violence and others that have to do with human rights,” she said.

Tejuosho promised the group that the House would take drastic steps, adding the Federal Government has a major role to play in passing such laws.

On her part, Omolara Folorunsho, the director of the training, Michael Imodu institute, who spoke on the challenges facing the women in the society maintained that female gender has been at a disadvantage in the scheme of things due to age long cultural, biological and social beliefs that subordinated it to the gender.

She said, “Men’s predominance in positions of organisation, power together with differences in the composition of men and women social and professional networks, give men greater access to information and support.”

Folorunso therefore advised the women to consistently seek knowledge and develop themselves.
