IBB jabs OBJ in Adenuga at 60 advert: “You remained loyal even when they tried to hang me”

It is hard to forget the “fool at 70″ back and forth between former Nigerian rulers, Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida in 2012. The dust on that matter has since settled but it is a fact that those two men do not like each other very much.

Former military dictator, Babangida, used the occasion of the 60th birthday of chairman of Globacom, Mike Adenuga, to make a subtle jab at Olusegun Obasanjo.

In an advertorial which was published in some national dailies, Babangida extolled Adenuga’s loyalty and commitment to true friendship, even when he was under severe pressure to betray him.

The give away that it was Obasanjo who was being referred to, came when Babangida mentioned that Adenuga’s persecution came at the hands of a regime which he [Babangida] helped nurture. Babangida was a powerful influence in the emergence of Obasanjo as civilian president in 1999 after his release from jail.

In the heydays of the Obasanjo administration in 2006, Adenuga was at some point declared wanted by the EFCC. There were strong speculations then that his travails were due to his support of the former military president, who at the time was rumoured to be strategising for a return to Aso Rock.

Read the full advert below:

“Mike, truly you epitomize hard-work, perseverance, doggedness, humility, diligence and patriotism. The fact that you treasure the virtue of true friendship and loyalty to any cause you believe in gives you the cutting edge. I am eternally grateful for all the troubles you had to go through because of me in the hands of a regime that tried to derail our friendship and relationship.

“Even when you came under severe pressure by that same regime which I helped to nurture, to blackmail me in order to hang me, you remained eternally loyal and steadfast. Only a businessman of character, sound upbringing and virtue could choose friendship instead of his economic empire. Only a man of delectable poise, with an open mind and fear of God would choose to sustain an age-long relationship instead of sacrificing same at the altar of avarice, greed and economic interest.

“Such tribulations are prices we have to pay for true friendship. Your ability to remain focused in the face of pressure coupled with your capacity to identify and nurture talents is the reason why you are MIKE ADENUGA. There can never be another Mike Adenuga of your orientation.”
