Nasarawa Killings: ‘SSS Certified Operatives Safety before the Incident’
The mystery surrounding the killing of many Police officers and men as well as operatives of the Directorate of State Security Service (SSS) has taken a new dimension, as report said that before the security operatives embarked on their journey of no return, the SSS operatives had gone to the shrine to certify that the coast was clear for the joint operations of the two security agencies.
According to a highly placed security source, the two security agencies and the Army had been contacted by the Nasarawa State government on the cultists’ activities going on in Ombatse village, about five kilometers from Lafia, the state capital.
The source said that the Army, which had agreed to the terms of the state government and promised to be part of the operation, backed out just before the operation began.
The source said just before this development, the then Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Abayomi Akeremale, had contacted the SSS operatives, who went on a surveillance operation of the village and came back with a clean report of free and safe operation.
Meanwhile, the late Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of Operations in the State, Mr. Ozi Momoh, who was earlier transferred out of the state and allegedly brought back with the influence of Governor Almakura, contacted his counterpart in the SSS to be part of the operation.
“Armed with the intelligence and the report from the SSS operatives that the coast was clear for the operation, the two top ranking security operatives, alongside their juniors set out on the journey.
“Along the line, the operation was leaked to the highly fetish people, who had not only planted their warriors along the road, but also had planted ‘juju’ which was said to have roasted the operatives alive immediately their vehicles touched the portion of the land.
“To say that the death of these security operatives were mysterious is to say the least, as up till this time, no one can explain a situation whereby about 100 trained security operatives would be killed just like that”, the top security officer stated.
But the spiritual head of Ombatse, and the leader of the cult group, Baba Alakyo, in an earlier interview with some Journalists, said the security operatives were killed by the god of the shrine.
Although Alakyo did not disclose how the god carried out the dastardly act, but insisted that no one raise a hand against any of the security operatives, explaining that their deity fought the battle for them.
He decried the growing notion that the people of Eggon were connected or responsible for the killing of the said security officers, adding that the entire population of his people are below 300 and that the number of youths in their community below 80.
He also added that the community was situated in the interior part of Nasarawa State. “The place is so interior and remote that even Igbos do not live here. So you know that there are no grocery stores here.” Alakyo said only the Police knew what it was going to Eggon to do. “We had no problems in Eggon to warrant police presence; we did not call the police.”
He said, “That is why it has become imperative that we need a panel, a federal panel to investigate what happened in Eggon. We need to have our name, the name of our community cleared. The federal panel is our hope. We have appeal to the President of Nigeria, Dr. Jonathan to launch an investigation into the killings,” said the administrative head of Ombatse while adding that the police mission to Eggon remained unclear.
