National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Sokoto Command, has convicted 15 drug peddlers in the last four months in the state. Speaking with THISDAY in Sokoto Saturday, its Commander, Alhaji Misbahu Idris, said the convictions were secured at the Federal High Court, Sokoto.

Idris stated that the drug peddlers were given various jail terms for the offences committed.
He explained that the Command also counselled 40 drug addicts in the last four months in the state. “We have so far counselled and rehabilitated 40 drug addicts since the beginning of this year in the state and reunited them with their families,” he said.

He said 620 kilogrammes of assorted drugs, especially cannabis was seized during the period under review.
According to him, the drugs were seized in Bodinga Local Government Council and Sokoto metropolis.
He attributed the modest success recorded by the Command to the efforts of its officers in that regard, adding that the suspects had been charged to court.

The NDLEA boss disclosed that the state government was currently constructing a rehabilitation centre capable of accommodating 100 inmates at a time.

He stated that the project which gulped about N60 million, would be equipped with skill acquisition centre where drug addicts would be counselled and also acquire vocational skills.
He pointed out that the inmates would be provided with soft loans after the counselling to enable them start a business of their own.

Idris decried lack of adequate logistics to enable its officers patrol nooks and crannies of the state.
The Commander however, appealed to the state government to assist the Command with logistics to enhance its activities.

He urged the public to continue to provide useful information to the Command, assuring that their identity would not be exposed.

“We hereby appeal to people of the state to cooperate with us by providing useful information on the activities of dealers of Indian hemp. We will maintain confidentiality and not expose anybody that provides us with useful information,” he stressed.
