A boy who was stolen when he was just two months old and was sold for N400, 000 in Onitsha, but has been rescued by the police now at one year, two months old.
The police in the state have also begun investigations into the role of an Onitsha-based orphanage in the sale of children that were stolen from Lagos and other parts of the state.

Four suspects Chibueze Mba , Bernadicta Ogbonna, Patricia Mbogu and Adaeze Mba , were on Thursday afternoon paraded before newsmen by the image maker in charge of the state police command, Ngozi Braide, who cautioned parents about leaving their children with strangers.

Chibueze, who started the baby business by selling his baby for N30, 000 was responsible for the stealing of children, while Benedicta sold them to desperate mothers and motherless babies’ homes.

Braide , while speaking on the arrest of the suspects, stated that the bubble on their activities got burst , when on the March 14, a man identified as Caleb Ezeaka, reported to the police at Ilemba Hausa about his missing four-year-old boy.

Father of the missing boy told the police that he last saw his son with Chibueze and his wife, Adaeze, who were until the incident, their neighbours and the couple had since the boy was declared missing, absconded from their house.

Investigations by the police eventually led to the arrest of the couple in Akwa Ibom and they both confessed to have sold the boy for N300, 000 to a woman, Bernadicta Ogbonna, in Onistsha area of Anambra State.

Bernaicta was arrested and she confessed as well and added that she had sold the boy to Patricia Mbogu , who could not give birth after many years of marriage for N600 000.

Chibueze, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, confessed to have sold four babies, including his own baby to Bernedicta and also admitted to have sold his wife’s unborn child for N200 000.

The suspect insisted that he was doing the business to help parents, who gave birth and could not afford to take care of such , as well as mothers , who were mentally inbalanced.

Akabueze, while speaking on how he started the business, said he met Bernedicta when he impregnated his girlfriend and could not cater for the child, leading to one of his friends introducing him to the woman.

“ My girlfriend , Ojugo got pregnant and her father sent her out of the house and he even threatened to kill me and we ran to Cross River State and one of my friend , Dozie , though older than me, introduced me to the woman,” Akabueze said.

He added that he said that the woman would give me N100, 000, but he only gave me N30, 000 and promised to give me the balance, but he did not give me. The woman later called me to be bringing children, whose parents could not cater for.

Bernadicta, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune also confessed to have bought the children from Akabueze and further confessed that she sold two of the children to a motherless babies’ home in Onitsha and another one to Patricia.

She, however, claimed that Akabueze had lied to him that he got the children from imbeciles, prostitutes and mothers, who could not cater for their babies.
Patricia also admitted to have bought a baby boy for N600, 000 from Bernadicta, but blamed it on her childlessness after 29 years of marriage.

Braide stated that the police are on the trail of the operators of the motherless babies ‘home which bought two of the stolen children, who were later rescued, while the operators escaped.
