A Burundian, Aisha Uwimana, has been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for trafficking substances found to be heroin.

A statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said Uwimana was caught at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport with 2.390 kilogrammes of heroin hidden in her hand luggage. She had boarded Rwanda Air from Burundi into Nigeria.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamzar Umar, confirmed the arrest.

He said, “A Burundian by name, Aisha Uwimana, had in her hand luggage two parcels of powdery substance that tested positive for heroin weighing 2.390kg. The case is under investigation.”

Uwimana in her statement to narcotic investigators claimed the bag was given to her by a Nigerian boyfriend.

She said, “My boyfriend gave me the bag he brought from Tanzania. He promised to marry me and take care of my only daughter.

“We were to come to Nigeria together but he later said that he will join me the following day. I trusted him because he was nice to me.”

Meanwhile, two detectives from the Switzerland Federal Department of Justice and Police have arrived Nigeria on a drug control cooperation mission with the NDLEA.

NDLEA Chairman, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, reaffirmed the agency’s resolve in counter-narcotic operations while receiving Swiss investigators, Carlo Crespi and Daniel Mona.

He said, “Nigeria’s drug control scorecard today is enviable on account of our determination to partner with other stakeholders. So far, about 20 NDLEA officers have been trained in Switzerland under the project.”
