Messenger in Court for Impersonating Police Sergeant

A 29-year-old messenger, Mohammed Lawal, on Monday appeared in a Senior Magistrates’ Court in Karu, FCT, for impersonating a policeman sergeant.

Lawal of Mararaba, Nasarawa State, is accused of parading himself as a police sergeant to deceive and gain favour from members of the public. He appeared before Senior Magistrate Aminu Abdullahi on a one-count charge of impersonation.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Mohammed Garba, told the court that the accused was arrested by ASP Peter Eze and brought to the Garki Police Station on March 6.

Garba alleged that the accused was arrested in a public place wearing a green mobile police beret of a senior officer cadre.

He further said that the team of officers on duty spotted the accused and observed something strange about him.

He said they invited him for questioning and he told them he was a police officer but failed to present an identity to back up his claim.

Garba said the accused refused to disclose where he got the beret from.

The offence, according to him, is punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he faces three years in prison or with an option to pay fine or with both.

After the charges were read to him, he pleaded not guilty.

The magistrate admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with a surety in like sum who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

The case was adjourned until April 7 for further hearing.
