Podium collapses as Fayose campaigns in Oni’s town

Tragedy was averted on Friday at Ifaki-Ekiti as the podium on which the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, stood to campaign collapsed.

Some of those who were on the podium were Fayose; his wife, Feyisetan; ex-Deputy Governor; Abiodun Olujimi; Senator Teslim Folarin; Senator Ayo Arise; a former House of Representatives member, Mr. Duro Faseyi and Prince Dayo Adeyeye.

A former Governor of Ekiti State, Segun Oni, who this week announced his decision to work with Governor Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress, is an indigene of Ifaki-Ekiti.

The wooden podium caved in as Fayose was addressing the crowd. This led to a temporary stoppage of activities, but those on the platform stood up again and Fayose continued with his address.

The PDP governorship candidate boasted that he would win the governorship election expected to hold on June 21, 2014.

He said that he had the support of the people of the state and that they had assured him of their support.

Fayose said that he defeated Governor Niyi Adebayo of the Alliance for Democracy in 2003, adding that he would defeat Adebayo’s godson- Fayemi.

He said, “Defeating Fayemi will be very simple. I defeated, conquered and subdued Adebayo, who was Fayemi’s godfather in 2003. Defeating Fayemi who is his godson will be simple. God has given me the power to defeat incumbent governors.”

The PDP candidate described Oni as a General without an Army. He said that Oni defected to the ruling party, leaving behind his Lieutenants in the PDP.

He said, “After October 16, 2010 when Fayemi was pronounced the governor, he left me in the cooler and I know very soon that he will put Oni in the cooler too.”

While predicting that Oni would return to the PDP, he said that he would plead with the leaders of the PDP to grant Oni waivers anytime he chose to return to the party.

Fayose promised to treat the people of Ifaki-Ekiti well if elected the governor of the state. He had earlier in his speech challenged Fayemi to a debate, saying he would teach him lessons on good governance.

Fayose said, “You don’t need to be a PhD holder before you know how to govern the people. I am ready to teach Fayemi how to govern the people. All you need to do is to listen to the people and please them.

“I did not borrow a dime in 2003 when I was in government. I even left a sum of N10.4bn behind when I left in 2006.
