FG Warns Contractors To Expedite Action On Road Projects

Contractors handling various roads projects in the country have been warned to expedite action on the projects or risk being sanctioned.``If you don’t, you are at the risk of being sanctioned,’’ the Minister of Works, Chief Mike Onolememen, warned on Friday while inspecting service lanes at the Onitsha Head Bridge on the Onitsha-Enugu highway.

The minister said that government would hold contractors responsible for poor jobs and delays in completion of jobs awarded to them, adding ``there will be no extension of time for completion of jobs.

``The era of extension of jobs had gone, the Federal Government shall no longer tolerate poor, delay of jobs, just as it will not accommodate and approve bogus augmentation on any project,’’ he said.

The minister noted that the Onitsha Head Bridge service lanes were being executed as part of the Federal Government’s effort to open-up the Onitsha axis which, he said, was the gateway to the South-east.

``It is one of the roads being funded by the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme. So, the onus lies on the contractors to work faster and be paid as soon as they have their certificates,’’ he said.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the level of work done on the service lane by CCC Construction Company, urging the company to step-up effort in completing the job.

Mr Hisham Gosayni, the company’s Area Manager in the South-east, said that part of the challenges facing the company was the presence of traders along the road.

``We are better equipped to tackle the challenges facing construction of the road since we have more equipment and we will execute the project according to specifications,’’ Gosayni said.
