Gunmen Kill 5 Policemen In Adamawa, As NSA Clarifies Position On Boko Haram

Daring gunmen yesterday opened fire on the divisional police headquarters in Gulak community in Madagali local government area of Adamawa State, killing three policemen in the process.The attackers thereafter seized the arms and ammunition at the police station before setting it ablaze. They escaped before reinforcement could be called in by the police.

The assailants, numbering 30, were said to have stormed the police station with dangerous weapons and taken the officers and men of the station unawares.

When the attackers left the police station, they swooped on two nearby banks and shot dead two other policemen on duty before ransacking the banks.

Police public relations officer for Adamawa State, Mr. Yoila Nemuel, confirmed the killing of the three policemen, saying that no arrest had been made.

He added that the mission of the gunmen was to attack the banks and make away with money.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Many parts of the north have been subjected to incessant bombings and shootings by gunmen raising fears over the economy of the region.

The newly-appointed national security adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, has however begun meeting with stakeholders in the region with a view to stemming the tide of bombings, which have claimed many lives and property so far.

Dasuki has visited Yobe and Borno states in the first leg of his peace efforts to mobilise stakeholders to make Boko Haram sect members see reasons to lay down their arms and embrace peace so as to save the north and Nigeria as a whole.

Meanwhile, Dasuki has denied ever putting a timeline to end the orgy of violence being unleashed on the north by the Boko Haram sect.

He said in a statement signed by his special assistant on media, Mr. Karounwi Adekunle, that he did not give a deadline to end the Boko Haram attack during his visit to Yobe and Borno states earlier in the week.

“The NSA never at any forum in Potiskum, Damaturu, both in Yobe State, on Thursday or in Maiduguri yesterday said he would bring an end to the sect’s hostility before the start of Ramadan Fast.

“His cogent message in all the meetings he’s held so far with some stakeholders has been the need for leaders to reach out and prevail on Boko Haram members to cease fire so as to create room for dialogue,” the statement said.
