An Algerian-born leader of Al Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) was killed in the northern Malian town of Gao on Friday, while Islamist groups claimed control of the area, local media reported.Malian news websites reported the death of Mokhtar Belmokhtar, and said the separatist rebel National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), which won control of Gao in early April, was ousted.
Belmokhtar had reportedly arrived in Gao on Thursday with dozens of Algerian fighters to bolster the presence of Islamist faction Ansar Dine and the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO).
Both Ansar Dine and MUJAO had been engaged in heavy fighting against MNLA rebels earlier in the week.
According to witness reports, at least 23 people had been killed in unrest in Gao since Tuesday.
