FG prepares ground to prosecute fuel subsidy fraudsters

The Federal Government is preparing the grounds for the prosecution of fuel subsidy fraudsters, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has almost concluded investigation into the N1.7 trillion sleaze. The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), who briefed the press at the end of the executive, legislative and judiciary meeting summoned by President Goodluck Jonathan in Abja to work out measures to tackle corruption in the country, said the report of the House of Representatives Committee probe on 2011 fuel subsidy claims was not discussed.

Adoke also said assurances were however given that as soon as the EFCC concluded its assignment, his office would begin prosecution of culprits.

``You will begin to see prosecution probably in the next one week; we will begin to prosecute because the EFCC has gone very far.

``So, Nigerians should rest assured that this is not an issue that will be swept under the carpet. We have gone this far because we want a proper and painstaking investigation done, so that when we charge people to court, there will be no lapses or loopholes for lawyers to exploit.’’

President Jonathan on Monday summoned the heads of the three arms of government to an unprecedented meeting to work out a national strategy to fight corruption in the country.

Also briefing State House correspondents after the two-hour closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, the Senate Majority Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), said the meeting deliberated on how the three arms of government could work together to tackle corruption.

He said the meeting received important insights from each arm of government, and would meet again to review issues that arose, and the way forward.

``The President is obviously worried about the incidence of corruption and from discussions we had, all the arms of government are indeed worried about the incidence of corruption in our society.

“And we looked at what the challenges were, prosecuting the fight against corruption. Some of the issues are constitutional. The National Assembly will take another look at these issues.

The judiciary also gave its own insight into the constraints. All of those will be addressed.

``The issue of funding of the agencies, especially the EFCC and the ICPC was also discussed, all of those issues will be addressed.’’

Representing the executive arm at the meeting, were the President, Vice-President Namadi Sambo, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Ali Sali and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
