Nigeria: Fashola Blames Lagos Floods On Unusual Weather

Lagos — Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State has blamed the flooding currently being experienced in Lagos metropolis on unusual weather that is "not peculiar to Nigeria and cannot be controlled by man".The governor, who was a guest on Channels Television yesterday, said the flood was not unusual worldwide, saying the drainages and gutters seen all over the metropolis were not the kind that could control the stormy waters.

"The infrastructure provided by the state government for the purpose of drainage is usually overstretched when the intensity of rainfall increases in a short period of time", he said.

On the suspension of third mainland bridge closure, Fashola ruled out any disagreement between the state and federal government, insisting that it was the responsibility of the state government to ensure free flow of traffic when the repair work commenced on the bridge.

"There was no disagreement at all. It is the constitutional right of the state government to ensure smooth flow of traffic and that was exactly what we planned. We don't have problem with the federal government on that", he said.
