Nigeria: Insecurity - More Troops to Be Deployed to Kano - Coas

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Azubike Ihejirika, today in Kano State said additional soldiers will be drafted to state to help speed up complete restoration of peace. The COAS disclosed this while addressing officers and men of the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army Kano, stressing that the planned deployment of more soldiers would return the state to its position as an enviable commercial entity not only in the county, but in the whole of West African sub-region.

Ihejirika, who was in the state to commission a new Brigade headquarters building in Bukavu Barracks and a borehole donated by the

3 Brigade to Unguwar Dabai community, also added that posting of troops to Kano will relieve other personnel presently serving in the state of work burden.

While commending the soldiers of their gallantry in handling the security situation in the state, Ihejirika urged them to desist from conducts that are capable of pitching them against the public. "Try to do things professionally. A soldier does not act in anger; he acts based on professionalism," he said.

The army chief also commended the troops for the protection they have been giving to women and children at areas of operation, and charged them to continue.

While fielding questions from newsmen, Ihejirika denied that there was an attempted mutiny by Nigerian army personnel serving in Sudan, saying however that there were initial delays by the United Nations headquarters to airlift some troops who have finished their tour of duty back home.

"Now that has been sorted out and the rotation has once again resumed. So there is no case of mutiny," he said.

Earlier, the army chief told members of Unguwar Dabai community that the gesture was aimed at strengthening the existing relationship between the military and members of the public, promising that the army will dig more boreholes for other communities in the state.

Receiving the COAS, Kano State governor, Engineer Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso, appealed to the military and other security agencies to continue with the good work they are doing in the state, and pledged to render more assistance to them.
