2 customs officers, 5 others killed in Lagos/Ibadan Expressway crash

Two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) were among seven persons killed in a fatal crash on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway at about 11.00 p.m Friday night. The duo were of the Ports Terminal Multi-Services Limited (PTML) command. Spokesperson of the command, Mr Steve Okonmah, who confirmed the death of Assistant Superintendent Adelaju Samuel and Customs Assistant Auwalu in the accident, noted that they died in the line of duty, as they were on their way back after an official summon by the customs management at the headquarters in Abuja.

He debunked allegations against his command that the officers had no reason for going to Abuja on the day of the accident.

“In line with our job and the courses we offer, they were officially summoned in writing and no such act will be taken without the management decision,” he explained.

It was gathered that the public transport conveying the officers and others ran into a stationary tipper on the expressway killing the seven passengers.

While Anwalu had been buried according to Islamic rites, the remains of Adelaju had been deposited at the morgue in Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
