Curfew imposed as gunmen kill 7, burn police station in Yobe

YOBE State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Geidam has declared a curfew from 6pm to 7am following an attack at Tarmuwa local government where four policemen and three civilians were killed yesterday, while two others believed to be policemen sustained gunshot injuries, when some gunmen, suspected to be members of Boko Haram, laid ambush to the Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters in the local government area.

The gunmen it was learnt, after killing the four policemen, succeeded in razing the police station using petrol bombs and other improvised explosive devices (IEDs), even as the three civilians were reportedly killed by stray bullets when trying to flee the area during the midnight attack.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the gunmen stormed the town on Wednesday midnight in a convoy of more than 10 Toyota Hilux vehicles to launch the deadly attacks on the police post in Tarmuwa.

According to a resident of the area who did not want his name mentioned in the print for security reasons the gunmen had intended to strike at Damaturu, the state capital, but because of the tight security in Damaturu and its environs, the gunmen decided to carry out the attack in Tarmuwa where they successfully raided the police station, killing about four policemen, while injuring two others on duty at the station.

Confirming the incident, the Yobe State Commissioner of police, Mr Sule Rufai said the attack was carried out at midnight on Wednesday, leaving four policeman killed and two others seriously wounded after an exchange of gunfire with the radical Islamic sect members which lasted for hours. He declined comment on the three civilians killed by stray bullets.

He stated that the injured policemen have been admitted at an undisclosed hospital where they are responding to treatment.
