FG/UBEC To Host National Summit On Basic Education
The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Ezenwo Wike, has directed the management of the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, to start the process of hosting a national summit on basic education delivery in the country.
Declaring open the eight quarterly meeting of UBEC management and the executive chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards, (SUBEBs) in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said the proposed summit should involve all critical stakeholders in the basic education sector.
He said: “I hereby direct UBEC to consider the possibility of holding a national summit on basic education delivery in Nigeria in collaboration with all stakeholders with a view to identify the critical challenges and the best ways to resolve them within the shortest possible time”.
The minister also announced that the Federal Government has changed the modality for training of teachers beginning from this year.
According to him, due to the actions of some states, the Federal Government has been unable to attain the value for money spent on the teachers professional development programme.
“We have noticed that the earlier model of releasing training funds to you is easily abused and has unfortunately failed to yield the much needed value for money spent. Consequently, I have approved the cluster school model proposed by UBEC with effect from this year in view of its envisaged benefits”, the minister said.
He stated that states yet to use their teacher training funds for 2012 will not be considered for the 2013 exercise.
On the distribution of free textbooks, Wike said the Federal Government will not tolerate the abuse of the distribution process at any level.
He assured the SUBEB chairmen that he will collaborate with them to convince state governors to access their outstanding matching grants.
In his address, UBEC Acting Executive Secretary, Prof. Charles Onocha, said substantial progress has been made in the basic education sector due to the commitment of the minister, pointing out that the synergy developed by the Ministry, UBEC and SUBEB chairmen is yielding the desired result.
Dean of SUBEB Chairmen, Alh Wada Zekeri commended the Minister for providing the right leadership for the resolution of the challenges facing the basic education sector.
Highpoint of the occasion was the interactive session between the Minister and the SUBEB chairmen.
