Fire outbreak at INEC headquarters again


THERE was another fire outbreak at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters, Abuja, on Monday afternoon. Nigerian Tribune learnt that the fire incident occurred at the ICT building of the commission, where similar fire outbreak recorded last year was still being investigated.

According to findings, immediately huge smoke was noticed oozing out from the ICT building, the fire service and others were alerted and raced to the scene, while its officials, led by the chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, reportedly rushed out of their offices when they got wind of the fresh fire outbreak.

It was gathered that no life was lost during the incident, expect for office equipment and other items in the office that were consumed by the inferno.

The chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, Mr Kayode Idowu, confirmed the incident in a press statement to newsmen in Abuja on Monday, saying that “formal investigation of the cause of the fire incident has commenced.”

According to Mr Idowu, “initial assessment, however, suggests an electrical fault.”

It will be recalled that last year, the ICT building was gutted by fire, the cause of which was yet to be unravelled as of the press time.
