Ibadan Fire Destroys 20 Houses, 30 Shops
Tragedy struck in Omitowoju area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, yesterday as no fewer than 20 buildings and about 30 other structures were consumed in an inferno caused by a falling petrol tanker. The fire, the LEARDERSHIP learnt, started around 6:30pm and by 8pm people were still battling to put out the fire.
It was gathered that the tanker carrying about 33,000 litres of petrol was trying to link Inalende road towards the Mokola roundabout area of the city when the driver lost control, causing the trailer to fall and spill its content.
It was gathered that the driver of the tanker took the densely populated area due to the closure of the Dugbe/Mokola road as a result of the ongoing construction of an overhead bridge in Mokola by the state government.
While the fire was still burning at the time of filing this report, the effect of the inferno led to the jam packing of the area by many sympathizers who were helping the offials of the state fire service in trying to put out the fire.
An eye witness said that when the tanker fell, most of the people in the area ran out of their buildings and that before long the entire area to be enveloped by thick smoke.
He added that it will be difficult to determine whether any life was lost in the incident, stating that an old man whose whereabouts could not be traced was in one of the affected buildings.
It was further gathered that fire men might find it difficult to extinguish the fire considering the crowded nature of the area.
At the time of filing this report, ressidents of the area were said to be praying for divine intervention, as they did not believe that the fire men could stop the fire and save some of their property.
