Lagos speaker’s trial stalled as prosecuting counsel withdraws

THE ongoing trial of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Adeyemi Kuforiji and his personal assistant, Mr Oyebode Atoyebi, over money laundering charges before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos took a dramatic twist on Tuesday as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) counsel, Chief Godwin Obla, announced his withdrawal from the case.

At the resumed hearing of the matter before Justice Okechukwu Okeke, a senior counsel with the EFCC, Mr Alli M. Yussuf, who appeared before the court announced Obla’s withdrawal from the matter.

Yussuf informed the court that though he was yet to see the letter written to that effect, he was compelled to appear in the case following the withdrawal of Obla who had been handling the case since inception.

Obla, in his notice of withdrawal as prosecuting counsel, attributed it to the various days totalling 13 days in the month of April which the court fixed for the hearing of the matter, stating that these dates would considerably constrain his ability to diligently prosecute the matter.
