Police Recover Bodies Of 11 Slain Officers In Bayelsa


A combined team of soldiers and Policemen, yesterday, recovered 11 out of the 12 burnt and decomposed bodies of the policemen killed along the creeks and waterways of the Azuzama communities of the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state.

Some of the recovered bodies were reportedly burnt beyond recognition and mutilated by their killers. They were also reportedly stripped of their uniforms and their rifles stolen in the attack.

The news of the recovery of the decomposed bodies of the policemen attracted crowd of family members and sympathisers to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) waterside.

A team of armed policemen were also deployed to provide security to the team of pathologists and ambulances stationed to conveyed the bodies to the morgue.

Spokesman of the Bayelsa Police Command, Mr Alex Akhigbe, confirmed to LEADERSHIP that the bodies of the slained policemen had been recovered and were being moved to the FMC mortuary.

He said, “Yes, the corpses of the slain policemen have been recovered and are being brought to Yenagoa.”

Also speaking on the development, the Media Coordinator of the Joint Military Task Force, Lt Col Onyema Nwachukwu said that the JTF, in a collaborative effort with the police, assisted in the search and retrieval operation for the bodies of the killed policemen.

The leader of the team of aggrieved ex-militant youths accused of the violent attack on the 12 policemen has been identified as Virus.

He is said to be the commanding officer of the dismantled camp of the ex-militant leader, Kile Selky Torughedi, known along the waterways and creeks of the state as Young Shall Grow.

Meanwhile, the ex-militant leaders in the state, under the aegis of the Leadership and Cultural Development Initiative (LPCDI) has pledged to join the police in the manhunt for the killers of the policemen.
