Motorists accuse FRSC officials of extortion in Nsukka

Motorists in Nsukka, Enugu state have accused officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission,FRSC, Nsukka unit command of extorting money from them on a regular basis. The aggrieved motorists alleged that instead of mounting checks on the federal highways, the FRSC officials position themselves on rural roads where they collect money from drivers.

The FRSC officials allegedly mount check points on the road leading to Nsukka Central School, University Road and Ugwuawalawa, collecting tolls in the name of checking road worthiness of vehicles.

“Once they stop you there, they must find one fault or the other. You will be compelled to pay certain toll, ranging between N500 to N1000, else you will be booked and taken to their office.

“The worst thing is that any motorists caught in the town would be booked to have been caught at the Enugu – Makurdi highway”, a motorist alleged.

When contacted for comment, the unit head of FRSC in Nsukka, Mr. Eneze U.J. said that his men had powers to operate at the streets in Nsukka.

He, however, declined comment on other issues put across to him.
