Kwara Poly Shut Over Students’ Unrest
The management of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin yesterday closed the institution following the resumed protest of the students over their colleague who was shot on Monday by the police. It also clarified that the victim of the police brutality, Dayo is not dead , saying that he was responding to treatment.
The authorities of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) also corroborated the claims of the polytechnic’s management.
The UITH spokesman, Oba Hassan Kadir in a repeated radio announcement assured the public that Dayo is not dead but was responding to treatment in the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Kwara State government has described the student’s shooting by the police as very unfortunate and appealed to his colleagues to be calm and avoid any action capable of disturbing the peace of the state capital.
The students angered by the shooting of their colleague by the police around post office area of Ilorin had begun protest in the state capital since Monday paralysing all activities.
They resumed protest yesterday as hundreds of students matched to A division police station, Taiwo, Unity and other parts of the state capital.
Consequently, all businesses and social activities were paralysed till around 2. 00 pm when few shops were sighted opening for businesses again.
Anti riot police officers were also sighted around the protest areas to prevent the protesters from tampering with government and private properties and ensuring that it was not hijacked by hoodlums.
The rector of the polytechnic, Alh Moshood Elelu in the statement said it became necessary for the institution to close because of the development and directed the students to return to their parents and guardians.
The statement added that, the students would be duly informed of the time of resumption whenever it is appropriate for the authorities.
The public relations officer of university of Ilorin teaching hospital, where the student is receiving medical treatment, Mr Abddulkadir Oba also told LEADERSHIP that the student is not dead.
“I can confirm to you that the student is hale and hearty, quickly responding to treatment contrary to insinuations that he is dead,”he said.
The Kwara State government in a statement by the secretary to the state government (SSG),Alh Isiaka Gold appealed to protesting students to remain calm and avoid any action that is capable of disturbing the peace.
The SSG in the statement issued in Ilorin yesterday, described as unfortunate the reported injury of a student caused by the police and called on the students to maintain the peace and disallow miscreants from hijacking their peaceful protests.
Gold said that while government recognises the students’ right to peaceful protest, the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on anyone apprehended for breaking the law under any guise.
He urged parents not to allow their wards to be used for any acts of criminality.
He called on the students to return to their various homes pending the reopening of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin which has been closed down following the incident.
Gold assured the students that the state police command has commenced disciplinary proceedings against the police officer at the centre of the incident and will take action to forestall a re-occurrence of the sad incident.
