Amaechi’s suspension: 2015 ’ll be dangerous –David-West

Former minister of petroleum resources, Prof. Tam David-West yesterday revealed that the fallout of the recently conducted election of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the suspension of Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are clear signs that the 2015 general elections will be dangerous.

In an interview with Daily Sun in Abuja, David-West urged President Jonathan to be wary of his advisers, whom he said were misleading him.
“The way President Jonathan is handling Governor Amaechi’s issue is exposing him to a lot of ridicule. It cheapens the Presidency and brings a great dishonour to him. Jonathan is fighting Amaechi who is his own party man and not an opposition party member.

“What is even more annoying to me is that Amaechi is Jonathan’s strongest supporter. Jonathan got his highest votes in 2011 from Rivers State and would not have happened if Amaechi had not supported him. Jonathan has got very bad advisers,” David-West said.

He added that in spite of Amaechi’s strong support for Jonathan, the Presidency was still bent on frustrating him.

“I’m a great critic of Jonathan. Anytime I met with Amaechi and the issue of Jonathan came up, he always took sides with Jonathan and was always quick to tell me to mellow down,” David-West revealed.

“They wanted to undermine Amaechi. They first destroyed Rivers State PDP executive by bringing people loyal to Wike. They also grounded the aircraft of the state. Amaechi has handled this issue honourably. The reason for which Amaechi was suspended doesn’t even fall under him. The state House of Assembly is the body that can suspend local government chairmen.

“Jonathan believes that PDP governors should be his kitchen boys. Amaechi is intelligent and focused. If he were licking Jonathan’s boots, things would have been different,” he alleged.

David-West said the creation of PDP Governors’ Forum was a ploy to whittle down Amaechi’s influence. “Now, they have formed PDP Governors’s Forum just to whittle down Amaechi’s powers. Amaechi doesn’t want the Governors’ Forum to be an extension of the PDP. Let it also be on record that I don’t respect Governors Godswill Akpabio and Peter Obi. Akpabio went and collected signatures just to scuttle the emergence of Amaechi. Are signatures ballot papers? That list was dated April and election was in May. How can you rig an election among equals?

“2015 will be a very dangerous year. If the Governors’ Forum made up largely of PDP members cannot conduct free and fair elections, how can Jonathan get it right in 2015? Nigeria should not trust PDP.

“The way PDP has handled Amaechi’s matter has even destroyed the party the more. By fighting Amaechi dirty, Jonathan has lost 2015 elections. PDP is destroying itself. They’ve no credentials to show to Nigerians,” he said.

On Jonathan’s second year in office, he said the president had performed abysmally. “I will not score Jonathan zero or 100. If I were to mark his script as student, I will score him -C.

“He has not done well. Every person is the best assessor of himself. Jonathan hasn’t been able to assess himself. He surrounds himself with praise singers.

“The earlier Jonathan knows that he has not done well, the better for him. If he has not done well in his first term, he doesn’t deserve second term.

“In December 2012, Asari Dokubo granted an interview and said Jonathan has failed and cannot go beyond 2015. Today he is saying if Jonathan is not reelected in 2015, Nigeria will seize to exist. Jonathan shouldn’t only distance himself from people like Asari; he should get him arrested. Jonathan is digging his grave ahead of 2015,” David-West added.
