8 die in Ogun auto crash

In another tragic occurrence at the weekend, eight passengers, including a baby, lost their lives in a lone accident that occurred at Fidiwo area at the Ogere end of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in the early hours of Saturday. The victims, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) website, included four males, three females and a little child. The accident involved a Toyota bus marked LAGOS XC 477 AGG.

Confirming the incident, the Commander, Ogere Unit Command of the FRSC, Mr. Godwin Sangbasa, told Sunday Tribune that the occupants of the ill-fated vehicle were traveling from Cotonou, Benin Republic, to Ikirun, Osun State.

According to Sangbasa, the driver of the bus was not familiar with the expressway and he was on top speed when the bus fell into a ditch.

He said eight persons died on the spot, while the remaining six were critically injured.

The FRSC boss warned against reckless driving, adding that his agency would put a slow down warning at the scene of the accident to prevent other vehicles from plunging into the ditch.

“The accident happened around 3.00 a.m. on Saturday. The bus is traveling from Cotonou to Ikirun, Osun State. The driver was reported not to have slept before embarking on the journey and since he was not familiar with the road, he ran into a ditch leading to the death of eight passengers on the spot, while my team rescued six persons,” he said.

The remains of the victims were reported to have been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, while those who sustained injuries were taken to Fakoya Hospital, also in Sagamu, for treatment.
