A crisis of interest may ensue between the two chambers of the National Assembly over the planned amendment to the tenure of elected officials in the country, just as the lower chamber of the legislative arm in the country has vowed not to support the much-touted six-year single term for president and 36 state governors.
The Senate Committee on Constitution Amendment had recently recommended a single term of six years for president and governors so as to end all problems and tensions associated with re-election among elected officials and strengthen the nation’s democracy.
However, a member of the House of Representatives ad hoc Committee on Review of the Constitution, Ibrahim El-Sudi, has revealed that the House will only support the retention of the present four-year presidential system of two terms, saying this is the overwhelming position of the House on the matter.
Speaking on Channels Television weekend programme, “Sunrise,” Mr El-Sudi disclosed that before any amendment could be done to the constitution, the two chambers of the National Assembly ought to come together to resolve their differences.
El-Sudi, who hinged the decision of the House on the belief that when people were elected for a single term, the elected officials would deliberately not perform because there was nothing to lose, said the Harmonisation Committee in the National Assembly needed to bring the two chambers together with a view to resolving issues bordering on the tenure of elected officials in the country.
