A DAD has told how he developed a horrendous rash on his head and body during his son’s birth — which meant he was banned from seeing the newborn for two weeks.
Tom Greenhalgh, 27, who has eczema, started scratching himself through nerves when wife Kerry, 24, went into labour.
After she delivered son Austin, Tom went home to sleep — and woke to find his neck inflamed and painful.
He had contracted an aggressive form of the cold sore virus, which can cause an agonising condition in eczema sufferers — and can be deadly to babies.
The rash last December quickly spread to his chest and face, leaving him covered in weeping sores. Tom said: “It was a nightmare. The rash was so contagious.”

Two days later — in unbearable pain — Tom was admitted to hospital.
He was put on antibiotics and antiviral drugs — then had to spend a fortnight at his parents while Kerry, 24, and son Austin went home to Ilkeston, Derbys.
Despite the precaution, Austin started developing the rash but it was spotted early and treated by doctors at Nottingham City Hospital.
Tom had to take six weeks off work at a plumbing merchants.
He said: “It was such a relief when I was allowed to go home and see Austin and hold him.”
