Oronto’s Sister Kidnappers Demand N500m Ransom

Yenagoa— The kidnappers of Mrs. Augusta Douglas-Ayam, sister to the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Research and Documentation, Mr. Oronto Douglas, on Thursday, demanded N500 million ransom for her release.

It was gathered that the gunmen, who kidnapped the woman Monday night, contacted the husband, yesterday.

Though the husband declined comment when contacted on the alleged demand, a family source told Vanguard that the kidnappers allowed the woman to speak with him.

The source said: “Yes, the husband spoke with the kidnappers and he told us that the wife was crying that her body is in pains.”

The source added that the husband pleaded with the kidnappers and asked them to reduce the ransom, “but they switched off the phone.”

According to the source, efforts by the family to contact the kidnappers again through the number proved abortive as it was not going through.

The source s aid: “We tried to call the number they used in calling the husband, but it did not go through.

“The amount they asked for is outrageous. Where do they expect us to get that kind of money?”

Another family source said: “We are worried about her health condition and this could put her in grave danger.

“It is pathetic that this is happening to us as a family at a time we are yet to recover from the multiple tragedy that occurred during the burial rites of our father.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, could not be reached for comments on the development.
