Court remands woman in prison for child abuse

A Mararaba Senior Magistrates’ Court 1, in Nasarawa State, on Monday remanded Margaret Ibanga of Aku village, Mararaba, in prison custody for alleged cruelty to child. The Senior Magistrate, Mr Iliya Aku, gave the order after Ibanga pleaded guilty to the two count.

Aku ordered that Ibanga should be remanded till March 21, to enable the court to decide a proper sentence for her.

He also said that the remand duration would enable the Child Rights Act to take its full course.

Earlier, the prosecutor, PC Jacob John, told the court that the matter was reported by one Mishak Ogbonna at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba, on March16.

John said that Ibanga had brought her sister’s daughter, one Peace, a 9-year-old girl, from Akwa-Ibom to stay with her.

He said the accused started maltreating her, beating her up with cane and causing her different injuries all over her body.

“The incident has been re-current, forcing Ogbonna, a concerned neighbour, to report the matter,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said that the offence was punishable under the Penal Code.
