A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja on Monday sentenced a businessman, Obuah Obiajulie, to three months in prison for causing a motor accident by driving dangerously.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Obiajulie was charged on two counts of dangerous driving and causing an accident.
She, however, gave him an option of paying a N2,000 fine.
Delivering judgment, the magistrate said: “Obuah Obiajulie is hereby sentenced to three months in prison with an option of N2,000 fine.
“The convict is equally to repair the vehicle of the complainant, Mr Abubakar Aliyu, or pay a compensation of N500,000.
“If the convict is unable to pay, he will serve an additional one year in prison without an option of a fine.”
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Philips Apollos, had told the court that the complainant, Aliyu of Life Camp in Abuja, had lodged a report against the convict.
He said the report was lodged at the Life Camp Police Station on Sept. 26, 2012.
“The accused, who was driving a Honda Accord with registration number CZ 523 BBC, had on the same date at about 5.53 p.m. driven on a highway in an uncontrolled manner,” Apollos said.
He said the accused drove dangerously on the Kado Estate Express Road, Abuja and crashed into a stationary vehicle with registration number FS 619 ABJ.
The prosecutor said the crushed vehicle, a Honda Accord which belongs to the complainant, was badly damaged.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 28 of the Road Traffic Act.
