Court Remands Ndume In Kuje Prison

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Friday, ordered the remand of Senator Mohammed Ndume, in Kuje prison till Monday when his bail application will be determined.
The Federal Government had, on Monday, re-arraigned  Ndume  over a four-count criminal charge bothering on non-disclosure of security information to the appropriate authorities.
Ndume had pleaded not guilty to the charge.
When the matter came up on Friday, counsel to Ndume, Ricky Tarfa (SAN) had prayed the court to admit the accused person to bail on grounds that he is a serving senator and that he needs medical attention from time to time.
He prayed the court to admit his client to bail on liberal terms, adding that he will not interfere with the proceedings of the court.
Opposing the application, the prosecuting counsel, O.O Fatunde, argued that the accused person might abscond since the offence for which he was standing trial carried a 20-year jail term.
After listening to all the parties, the trial judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole adjourned till Monday for ruling on the bail application.
The court also fixed February 2,7 and 14, 2012 for trial.
Ndume was re-arraigned by the government after the State Security Service (SSS) withdrew the charge filed against him before an Abuja Magistrate Court.
He, alongside the former spokesperson of the Boko Haram sect, Ali Kodunga, had earlier been arraigned before the Magistrate Court on one-count charge of criminal intimidation by anonymous communication.
The court had sentenced Kodunga to three years imprisonment after pleading guilty to the charge.
The court, in turn, struck out the charge against Ndume following the application brought by the SSS on the ground that the government had filed a fresh charge against him at the Federal High Court.
